Rhodes Etiquette: What Locals Want Tourists to Know
How to be a respected guest in Rhodes, Greece: tipping, reviews, free treats, and respecting Greek pride, heritage and hard work.
What Locals in Rhodes Want Tourists to Know
The people of Rhodes are famous for their hospitality, called filoxenia. To get the best from the island, here is what locals ask of their visitors.
1. Don't Use Reviews as Blackmail
Never threaten a bad review to get a discount, a free meal or an upgrade. If something goes wrong, speak politely to the owner or manager, and they will usually try to fix it. Reviews should be honest, not a bargaining tool.
2. Don't Ask for Free Things
Restaurants, hotels and shops are family businesses working long hours in a short season. Don't ask for free drinks, desserts or extras.
3. Tip, and Don't Make Excuses
Tipping is part of the culture. Leave about 5–10% in restaurants and cafés, and round up for taxis or small services. Don't look for reasons to avoid tipping.
4. A "Free" Treat Is a Gesture of Friendship
When a taverna brings you a free dessert, raki or fruit, it is a gift of hospitality. In return, show your appreciation: leave a tip, say a kind word, come back again and write a good review.
5. Respect Greek Pride
Greeks are very proud of their heritage, history and work. Don't shout, don't treat staff as servants, don't take advantage of people and don't try to hurt their pride. A smile and a simple "Efharistó" (thank you) go a long way.
6. Small Courtesies That Matter
- Greet people with "Kaliméra" (good morning) or "Kalispéra" (good evening).
- Dress modestly in churches and monasteries.
- Be patient, because meals in Greece are meant to be enjoyed slowly.
