Feraklos Castle in Haraki: History and Visitor Guide

High on a rocky hill between the fishing village of Haraki (Charaki) and Agathi Beach stand the ruins of Feraklos Castle, one of the most important fortresses of medieval Rhodes.

Byzantine Origins

A fortification probably existed on the hill in Byzantine times to protect the coast and its harbor from pirates.

The Knights of St. John

After the Knights Hospitaller took Rhodes in 1306–1309, Feraklos became one of their first and strongest castles. They rebuilt and expanded the walls, and the castle protected the bay used by their fleet. According to historical accounts, the Knights also used Feraklos as a prison for knights who broke the rules of the Order.

The Last Stronghold (1522–1523)

In 1522, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent besieged Rhodes with a huge army. The city of Rhodes surrendered at the end of December 1522. Feraklos was among the last places to resist and only fell in early 1523, which gives it a special place in the island's history.

Ottoman and Later Years

After the Knights left, the castle lost its military role and slowly fell into ruin. Today, sections of the walls and towers remain.
