Best Time to Visit the Acropolis of Lindos (Avoid Crowds & Heat)

When to visit the Acropolis of Lindos in Rhodes: best month, best hour, opening hours tips, tickets, donkeys, what to wear and how to avoid the crowds.

Best Time to Visit the Acropolis of Lindos

The Acropolis of Lindos stands 116 meters above the sea and is one of the most visited sites in Greece. Choosing the right time to go makes a huge difference.

Best Time of Day: As Soon as It Opens

Arrive at opening time, usually around 08:00 in summer. You'll have cooler temperatures, soft light for photos and far fewer people. Cruise and coach groups usually arrive from about 10:00 onwards. A late-afternoon visit before closing is the second-best option.

Avoid going between 11:00 and 15:00 in July and August. The rock has almost no shade, and temperatures can exceed 35°C.

Best Months

  • April–June: pleasant temperatures and wildflowers. This is the best overall period.
  • September–October: warm sea for a swim afterwards and thinner crowds.
  • July–August: very hot and crowded, so only visit early in the morning.
  • Winter: quiet, with reduced opening hours.

Opening hours and ticket prices change by season, so check the official Greek Ministry of Culture site or buy tickets at the entrance.

How to Get Up

The walk from the village takes about 15–20 minutes up steep, slippery steps. Wear shoes with grip. For animal welfare reasons, we recommend walking rather than taking a donkey.

What to See

  • The Temple of Athena Lindia (4th century BC)
  • The Hellenistic stoa with its grand staircase
  • The relief of a Rhodian ship carved in the rock (about 180 BC)
  • The Knights' castle walls
  • The view down over St. Paul's Bay

Combine Your Visit

Swim at St. Paul's Bay or Lindos Beach afterwards, then have lunch on a rooftop in the village. Learn more in our history of Lindos.
